Add a Staircase to your Training Routine
2 Oct 2007
If you're serious about getting into shape then add a staircase routine into your weekly training and you'll start seeing results right away!
I discovered this training method when a good friend and training partner, Shawn Sauve, and I were preparing to fight in the 1994 Tae Kwon Do world championships in England, and we needed to get into shape fast. We started out by running up and down the stairs leading up to our gym. This was only a two storey building, but this didn't diminish the value. Since we didn't have a lot of room we always kept the railing on our right side and this way we didn't run into each other.
We discovered the best way to run stairs was to run them one step at a time. Don't skip any steps! Skipping steps means less work and the aim is to condition the body for aerobic capacity and muscular endurance. If you plan on using a real staircase instead of the fancy machines that now exist, make sure you use the railings. ONE HAND ON THE RAILING AT ALL TIMES. I can't count how many times our legs gave out and the only thing that stopped us from crashing hard was the railing.
When it comes to choosing a location to running up stairs the nice thing is that you've got a lot of options. Technically all you need is one step. Step up and down repeatedly and you'll start to feel the benefits quickly. The only problem with this type of training is the boredom factor. I recommend you get yourself a location with as many floors as possible. For example, I used to use the 6 Storey staircase at my old work or perhaps if you're looking for an outdoor location, try the stairs behind the parliament buildings.
Running stairs will also help you train your mental toughness and determination at the same time. It's kind of like running up a mountain. You've got a clear target in site and you don't stop until you reach the top. If you can't make it to the top on the first attempt...you keep going until you get there!
Another great thing about running stairs is that you can do them no matter what the weather is like. In fact, I recommend you make your poor weather days a stair climbing day!
All in all, stair climbing has many benefits and can ad the kind of variety to a training routine that keeps it fun an exciting. If you need extra motivation, get a friend to do it with you.
